A construction worker who nearly died after collapsing in Surrey Quays is now making a steady recovery in hospital – thanks to a hero officer who performed CPR on him for an incredible 23 minutes.
Rui Andrade began to feel chest pains and stepped outside to get some fresh air, but suddenly fell to the ground suffering a severe heart attack. Fortunately, PC Mitchell Howton and his colleague were nearby and rushed over to help.
Rui was in a coma for two weeks after the episode, but thanks to PC Howton’s immediate intervention he is now talking and eating again.
Last week Rui had an emotional reunion with the #hero officer, who has been on the force for two years.
Rui said “I cannot thank Mitch enough for what he did for me that day – he is a hero to me. I will hold him in my heart and life forever now”.
Rui’s thirteen-year-old son also thanked PC Howton, saying “Thank you for saving my dad’s life”.
We wish Rui a swift recovery, and want to extend an enormous thank you to PC Howton and all of our brave officers who regularly go above and beyond to protect the communities they serve.
